EU-China High-Level Dialogue: Advancing Cooperation for a Sustainable Future
Today, in Beijing, China, the 6th EU-China High-Level People-to-People Dialogue (HLPPD) on education, culture, youth, and sport convened, marking the first in-person meeting since 2017. The dialogue, a follow-up to the EU-China Summit in December 2023, aimed to strengthen cooperation between the European Union and China on various fronts, particularly in addressing environmental challenges and fostering inclusive academic environments.
Under the theme "working together for a greener and more sustainable future," discussions centered on the pivotal role of education in advancing environmental sustainability, as well as the importance of balanced student mobility, particularly in light of disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
A core concern reiterated by the EU side was the need for academic freedom and inclusive participation of civil society institutions and think tanks. While acknowledging progress, the EU expressed hopes for further steps from China to support open scholarly exchange and inclusion.
Climate change's direct and indirect impacts on cultural heritage were also deliberated, emphasizing the preservation of diverse cultural legacies, including those of minority groups. Both sides affirmed the significance of cultural diplomacy and underscored the importance of an enabling environment for exchanges devoid of censorship.
Gender equality and youth empowerment were focal points, with discussions centered on amplifying young voices in tackling climate change and enhancing women's participation in STEM subjects. In the realm of sports, there was consensus on organizing major events in an environmentally and socially responsible manner, aligning with the objectives of the European Green Deal.
Looking ahead, a seminar will be jointly organized to delve deeper into increasing women's participation in STEM subjects, reflecting the commitment to further collaboration and progress.
The HLPPD, launched in 2012, stands as a vital platform for EU-China engagement on mobility, education, gender equality, youth, sport, and culture. The dialogue underscores the EU's multifaceted approach to engagement with China, aiming for continued progress and cooperation on the people-to-people level.
As both sides reviewed the achievements of the HLPPD and committed to further enhancement, the dialogue reaffirmed the shared goal of fostering a level playing field for exchange and cooperation between the European Union and China.
